Butter Island Picnic
The annual Butter Island Picnic has been a highlight of mid-summer for DIYC families and guests for more than 60 years. The 310-acre island lies three miles west of Sylvester Cove, beckoning sailors, motor boaters and paddlers to pack lunch and a swimsuit and meet on Nubble Beach. A quick climb up Monserrat Hill offers a breathtaking 360-degree view of Penobscot Bay. Butter is among the largest island in the Maine Island Trail Association, and we thank owner and DIYC member Rob Cabot and his family by leaving no trace behind. Bring your own boat, or meet on the DIYC float around 11 am and hitch a ride, or contact the Sunset Bay Company to arrange passage on the mail boat (201) 701-9316.
