A Spring, 2011 message from Commodore Wakelin
Hello Everyone!
The snow has finally melted in New England and outdoor sports are about to get under way. Although the Board of Governors did not meet on Deer Isle this winter, we were busy communicating in the cloud reviewing the winter’s events and planning the club’s 2011 activities. The schedule of events, which appears at the end of this newsletter, will as usual offer something for everyone. The Events Committee has begun preparing for the upcoming season and the club can always use volunteers to help with the numerous annual activities, if you’d like to be more involved please go to the website or contact the Events Committee. This year should be a great one for the Deer Isle Yacht Club. The Club is in excellent shape and I look forward to the season with great excitement.
Speaking of the website, the Club’s website (www.DeerIsleYachtClub.com) continues to be a work–in-progress. If you haven’t already visited it, I’d encourage you to do so. Past newsletters will be posted there along with the calendar of events and updated information. In response to several requests, the Board has adopted a web and email policy. There is a section for on the website for members to post notices seeking transportation, For Charter and For Rent ads, etc., which will be screened for legitimacy. Also, the email list of members will only be used for official business or notices and will not be made available for individuals to use. If you have to ideas for the site, historical or current pictures to be posted, etc. we’d love to hear from you. Email us at Web@DeerIsleYachtClub.com.
By now you should have received your dues notices with the water on the dock survey. As discussed at the Annual Meeting, the Board of Governors has begun exploring the feasibility of placing water on the dock. The Club has been debating the merits of this endeavor for a long time and the Board of Governors is seeking membership’s interest in this endeavor. To that end, we have sent out a survey form to solicit feedback from the membership on this worthwhile project. You may return the survey form in written form with your dues notice, write a response on an electronic form at the website or send an email response to the commodore at commodore@deerisleyachtclub.com. Once the responses are tabulated, the Board of Governors will report back to membership with next steps.
For those members with moorings in the Cove, Buster Peasley is again available for mooring maintenance. As you know, Buster is a very experienced mooring maintenance expert. He began work for club members last year providing maintenance and repair services from his heavy duty barge which can lift mushrooms of any size and granite blocks up 1000 lbs. If you did not choose to have work done last year or missed the opportunity, the Club would like to stress that the placement and integrity of moorings continues to be the responsibility of members. Annual maintenance is a good way to avoid the problems the Club has experienced in the past.
With an ever-increasing membership, key issues the Club faces continue to be parking, tenant charter rules and the guest mooring policy. Space in the parking lot has become increasing difficult with increased traffic at the Cove. With this in mind, the BOG has begun developing a plan to improve the parking situation. In addition, I would like to remind members to obtain parking stickers and place them on their vehicles. Parking permits maybe obtained at Maine
Camp Outfitters in Sunset (Andy Fuller’s office at the Sunset Post Office). I would also like to remind members of the tenant-charterer rules and guest mooring policies. The Board of Governors has a long-established policy for assessing a tenant-charterer fee for non-members who rent a house or charter a boat from a member of the club and who use the Club facilities and/or participate in the Club activities in the manner of a member. Please be aware that the guest mooring is available for short stays and is suitable for yachts to about 40 feet in length. The Club does not guaranty the adequacy or safety of the mooring. Finally, I would like to remind members that moorings maybe rented to other members, however it is against club policy to rent moorings or provide access to club facilities to non-members.
As usual, the floats and ramps will be in the water by Memorial Day. I’d like to thank Loring Kydd and Pearl Hardie for their efforts in protecting these valuable assets of the club. The Board of Governor’s has decided again to place a float for sailing dinghies in the Cove. This float is designed for small boats to be conveniently stored out of the way and easily accessed. Please make sure your dinghies are properly marked with name and numbers.
I am very excited about the upcoming season; I wish everyone a happy spring and look forward to seeing you in and around The Cove!
